In the third year of life of the child large changes in psychomotor development can be observed. The toddler is more active and physically fit, can't sit too long in one place. His hands and feet are already very functional and ready for any fun. It's also time when speech flourishes.

The child speaks without interruption, asks questions, can learn up to 1200 words that he can use. Initially, he can name objects and activities, and in the next stage the relationships and effects of given things. He also begins to build sentences composed of several words - consistent and logical. Gradually, typical children's speech disappears. It often happens that speech development cannot keep up with intellectual development, causing the child not yet fully know what words to describe his feelings. He starts to get angry, talk quickly, impatiently and even stutter. However, this should not bother the parents, you need to calmly give the toddler time and pretend that imperfections do not exist, with time the speech will stabilize.

The three year old does not speak

Parents of 3-year-olds often get anxious when they watch their childrenand poor vocabulary. The toddler uses single words: mom, dad, woman or typical children known only to him. Otherwise he prefers to show rather than speak, or uses one name for several items. Although every child develops at their own pace and has the right to stand out from others, however stopping the 3-year-old speech process should prompt parents to intervene.

Maybe it's enough to give your child some time. However, it's usually not worth the long wait so that it doesn't turn out too late. If the parent sees that the toddler at the end of the third year is completely unable to speak simple words and sentences, you need to go to a pediatrician or speech therapist for consultation. It is only in the specialist's office that you can find out if there is a problem with your child, whether it is better to wait or act immediately.

The reasons for the lack of speech in a three-year-old

There are many reasons for the shoulder of speech in a three-year-old child. You have to look at the child thoroughly, check at what stage of intellectual development, whether it is correct or also slightly delayed. To a large extent, readiness goes hand in hand with brain maturity to speak. It also happens that the speech engine is not yet ready to speak correctly. Lack of speech development in a 3-year-old may be the result lack of proper exercises e.g. parents do not talk much to the child, do not require him to use words, the child spends all days watching TV, etc.

It can appear in a child alalia so-called dumbness. It is a partial or total loss of speaking or understanding. Speech develops late, even up to the age of 7, while mental development is sufficient. The child has a functioning speech apparatus and hearing, but damage to cortical structures before speech development prevents its proper development. The child with alalia does not speak at all, communicates using gestures, screams, or words from his own vocabulary that his loved ones often already understand. Such a child must be under constant speech therapy, attends a normal kindergarten and with time using speech therapy, his speech becomes clearer.

First aid for a non-speaking three-year-old

Pediatrician on balance tests of a child he should see if his speech engine is developing well. If necessary, he will refer the child to a speech therapist (no referral required). The speech therapist will try to find out at what stage the speech development is and how to help the child by means of an interview with the parent and child. However, a lot depends on parents in this matter. The speech therapist will choose the appropriate exercises that you need to systematically practice with your child at home. Only in this way will the therapy have the desired effect. It may happen that the speech therapist, despite the therapy, will not be able to help the child. In this case, you may need to consult a neurologist, ENT specialist, psychologist to find out the reason for the inhibition of speech development and apply appropriate treatment.

How to support a three-year-old's speech at home?

His surroundings play an important role in the child's speech development. Including a three-year-old in conversations, asking questions, naming objects loud and clear, activities, and having fun together during which you can talk, all this should encourage speaking. If a child distorts words, pronounces them incorrectly, they should not be ridiculed or forced to speak correctly, because we will only discourage them from speaking. At home, it is worth reading fairy tales to the child, discussing their content together. The child should be given the opportunity to speak and speak as often as possible, e.g. how was in kindergarten, what happened on a walk. If your toddler speaks individual words, you can teach him short, simple poems, what is his name, where he lives. We speak to the child correctly, not imitating his pronunciation or feeling affectionate. The child must have the correct role model.

Exercises to improve speech development of three-year-olds

You can apply the correct speech exercises with your child at home. They have a form of fun and will help in developing precise movements of the tongue, lips and palate, which will help in the correct pronunciation of words. They can also be used for children with correct pronunciation, which will have a positive effect on speech clarity. Examples of exercises (best to do them in front of the mirror):

  • touching the teeth with your tongue counting the teeth,
  • sliding the tongue on the surface of the upper and lower teeth brushing teeth

Speech for a child and ability to communicate are of great importance. They facilitate contacts, transfer of feelings and needs. Speech also has a significant impact on his intelligence, shapes thinking and memory.

In the third year of life, speech should be developed enough for the child to communicate freely with the surroundings. If we see that he has considerable difficulties, we must try to help him at home. When this is not effective, it is better to consult a specialist who will instruct you how to help your child. It is usually enough to work with a child at home, which can be tedious, but very often it brings results. All you need is a little patience and a few exercises in the form of fun and our three-year-old will start to speak correctly over time.
