For unclear reasons of the publisher focus on offering readers' guides for pregnant women and young children (up to two years). The older the child, the fewer and fewer reasonable positions there are.

Or maybe it is not so difficult to explain? Maybe just debuting parents need special support and are most often looking for help? When you take a closer look and consider how many problems often caring for a few years old, you can quickly refute this type of hypothesis. Children require a lot of attention at every stage of development. With the difference that the older the child is, the harder it is to give "simple recommendations" and clear directions. The more space you need to leave upbringing, and the less care or care. Maybe that's why there are so few good guides for parents of several-year-olds? Is this one worth reading?

"Child Development 0-3", reviewed by us earlier, is a guide that has been refined in every respect. Its next part created for children aged 3-6 is more difficult to receive, for which it is difficult to blame the authors. Creating a guide covering important topics for parents in preschool age seems definitely more difficult, also because of the toddler's already outlined temperament and the resulting need to adapt the way of parenting to the individual characteristics of the child.

It seems that for these reasons at the very beginning the authors presented the silhouettes of four children. This treatment was aimed at improving the reception of the guide, allowing you to find a similarity between the temperament of "example children" and your own child.

In my opinion, however this procedure does not quite work. It tells you to remember permanently what distinguishes a given child and adapt tips to individual descriptions that accompany the reader throughout the book. If they were only outlined at the very beginning, the process would seem simple. Meanwhile, sometimes browsing the guide is quite a challenge and makes you do it from beginning to end, and not at random - how often you read such items.

The pros behind this reading definitely outweigh the cons. First of all, the authors draw attention to the need to educate and introduce discipline. They also pay attention to the impact on parenting (and approach to it) of parents' personal experiences.

"The most important resources parents draw from are their own childhood experiences. However, resisting ghosts from the past can be an extremely painful challenge. It is difficult to teach discipline, when reminiscences from years ago cause that mother or father feel almost like a child themselves, they dream about evading responsibility for upbringing or are afraid that they will not be able to refrain from beating in time. " (S.63)

The guide answers in an interesting way, among others, to the questions:

  • what to do if a child beats other children,
  • how to react to biting,
  • how to teach a child to clean
  • how to teach good manners,
  • how to react to profanity,
  • also addresses difficult topics: ADHD, asthma, adoption, birth order, shaping habits.

"Child Development 3-6" is a novelty from the Gdańsk Psychological Publishing House.
